Amsterdam based architects Office Winhov transformed a former university dissection laboratory in Amsterdam into the 5* Pillows Grand Boutique Hotel Maurits at the Park, as part of the city’s transformation of Oosterpark. The Oosterpark masterplan enabled changing the use of adjacent monumental buildings and encouraged their integration with the park.
Office Winhov restored the street-facing facade of the former laboratory building and selected one of the three wings facing the park, an afterthought constructed of inferior materials, as the site for an extension. Paired windows, that reference the existing ones, and bricks of a richer colour but similar tone and size to the original are used to harmonise the extension with the restored building without concealing the fact that that they are new.
