Zurich-based architects Mathis Kamplade have designed a free-standing apartment building set back from the street in an urban setting. The structure, composed of concrete pillars with stiffening walls and plastered brick infills, is legible from both the inside and outside.
The internal rooms benefit from a spatial layout that avoids corridors, making efficient use of space. Each apartment occupies an entire floor, allowing windows on all sides to bring in natural light from every direction. The flexible layout, featuring double doors and folding walls with integrated doors, enables the apartments to adapt seamlessly to the needs of their occupants.
The windows are positioned at the corners such that, upon entry, rooms appear to be outside spaces. The structural elements around the windows extend beyond the facade, framing views of the surrounding landscape. Photo by Rory Gardiner. Mathis Kamplade Architekten
