Is this Tomorrow? at The Whitechapel Gallery, London

14 February to 12 May 2019

Whitechapel Gallery has invited ten groups of artists and architects including 6a, Adjaye Associates and David Kohn, to offer their visions of the future. The ‘Is this Tomorrow?’ exhibition follows on from Whitechapel’s ‘This is Tomorrow’ exhibition in 1956 which featured architects including Alison and Peter Smithson. Whitechapel Gallery.

Olio is new range of tableware by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby for the ceramic company, Royal Doulton. In the English language Olio means ‘a miscellaneous collection of things’ and the range is built from a combination of materials and surface finishes: ceramic, wood and stainless steel, different clays, glazed and unglazed elements. The extensive range of 40 pieces, includes cutlerly, wooden serving pieces, and a full table top ceramic range, all designed for everyday use. Newport Street Gallery involved the conversion and transformation of a street facing a railway line in Vauxhall, south London, into a free public gallery for artist Damien Hirst’s private art collection. Three listed Victorian industrial buildings, formerly carpentry and scenery painting workshops for West End theatres, have been remodelled and flanked at either end by entirely new buildings; one with a spiky saw-tooth roof. RIBA.

In 1982 Richard Sapper designed the 9091 kettle for Alessi. The central element in the design is the brass whistle which, when the steam exits, produces a short and pleasant melody. Richard Sapper wanted to avoid the usual anxiety-generating noise produced by other kettles then on the market, and by following this exquisitely poetic philosophy he produced what is probably the first multisensory object for the kitchen. Alessi

Impressionists in London at Tate Britain

The ‘Impressionists in London’ exhibition at the Tate Britain displays over 100 works including art by Monet, Tissot and Pissaro, created while the artists were in exile in Britain during the Franco-Prussian war. The exhibition explores London through the eyes of the French artists, and is curated by Dr Caroline Corbeau-Parsons. Tate Britain
