London-based architects Knox Bhavan have designed a new house and studio in a Hertfordshire village for a client who became paralysed from the shoulders down following a life-changing accident as a teenager. The house stands on the same lane where the client grew up and replaces a poorly built 1950s chalet bungalow, maintaining a similar size. Knox Bhavan utilised a prefabricated cassette system, developed in collaboration with modular manufacturer BlokBuild and engineers Price & Myers.

Emeco to Emeco exhibition designed by Jasper Morrison, at Triennale Milano

As part of Milan Design Week 2024, an exhibition by Jasper Morrison traces the 80-year history of Amercian furniture manufacturer Emeco and its iconic 1006 Navy Chair. Designed in 1944 for the US Navy, the 1006 Navy Chair was to be lightweight, non-corrosive, and fire-resistant. The chair was made from 80% salvaged aluminium and tested to last 150 years.

Blå Station Moodbord table designed by Modesty Concept
The Moodbord table was designed by Modesty Concept, a design firm based in Gothenburg, for Blå Station, a furniture brand in Åhus, Sweden. The table features a single drawer with its contents visible through the glass top surface. It is double-sided and can be linked to create larger tables. Daisuke Yamamoto designs the FLOW furniture collection
Tokyo-based, Japanese designer Daisuke Yamamoto, utilised discarded Lightweight Gauge Steel (LGS), commonly used in construction framing systems, to create the FLOW furniture collection. The design prioritises deconstruction to avoid a 'scrap and build' construction process. Yamamoto advocates for a 'fluid material lifecycle minimising industrial waste' approach, seeking to shift from a conventional 'think → build → waste' model to a more sustainable 'waste → think → recreate' process. Erwan & Ronan Bouroullec design multifunctional ‘Truss’ collection of furniture for Emeco
Paris-based designers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec have designed 'Truss', a multifunctional collection of tables, sofas and benches, for American furniture maker Emeco. The manufacturer is known for its reuse of waste materials and robust handcrafted chairs that are built to be passed down through generations, an example of which is the 1006 Navy Chair® made from scrap aluminium in 1944.

Duo Seat by Muller van Severen for Valerie Objects
Muller van Severen designed the Duo Seat for their solo exhibition Future Primitives at Interior Kortrijk in 2012. The Duo Seat consists of slim horizontal steel bars with cloth spanning between the bars, allowing large pieces of furniture to appear 'invisible'. Shortly afterwards, Muller van Severen created the Solo Chair, which was a core version of the Duo Seat and also the Rocking Chair, both of which follow the same principle of visual lightness. Maison à Bordeaux by Rem Koolhaas, OMA
Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas of OMA, designed Maison à Bordeaux, a three-floor house on a hill overlooking Bordeaux. The house was designed for a couple. Following a car crash, the husband became wheelchair-bound and his brief to the architect was clear, 'I do not want a simple house. I want a complex house because the house will define my world'. The heart of the house is a 3m by 3.5m elevator platform that moves between the three floors and itself becomes part of the kitchen, living space or office, giving easy access to books, artwork or a wine cellar. Charles Pollock cp1 for Bernhardt Design
Lounge Seating designed by Charles Pollock for Bernhardt Design. Charles Pollock's designs were governed by two principles. Creatively, he favored a continuous curved line when sketching ideas and creating forms. The second principle was that any product must be visually attractive, functional, and affordable. In 2012, the 82-year-old Pollock introduced his first new product in America since the debut of his iconic Pollock Chair forty-seven years earlier. Mies van der rohe Barcelona couch
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was selected to design the German Pavilion for the 1929 International Exposition in Barcelona. Inside, Mies included chairs and stools for the King and Queen of Spain. Designed in 1930, the Barcelona Couch shares the same simple elegance as the iconic lounge chair. Mies granted Knoll the production rights to the Chair and Stool in 1953.
