The Little Big House by Knox Bhavan in Hertfordshire, UK

London-based architects Knox Bhavan have designed a new house and studio in a Hertfordshire village for a client who became paralysed from the shoulders down following a life-changing accident as a teenager. The house stands on the same lane where the client grew up and replaces a poorly built 1950s chalet bungalow, maintaining a similar size. Knox Bhavan utilised a prefabricated cassette system, developed in collaboration with modular manufacturer BlokBuild and engineers Price & Myers.

Daisuke Yamamoto designs the FLOW furniture collection

Tokyo-based, Japanese designer Daisuke Yamamoto, utilised discarded Lightweight Gauge Steel (LGS), commonly used in construction framing systems, to create the FLOW furniture collection. The design prioritises deconstruction to avoid a 'scrap and build' construction process. Yamamoto advocates for a 'fluid material lifecycle minimising industrial waste' approach, seeking to shift from a conventional 'think → build → waste' model to a more sustainable 'waste → think → recreate' process. Maison à Bordeaux by Rem Koolhaas, OMA

Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas of OMA, designed Maison à Bordeaux, a three-floor house on a hill overlooking Bordeaux. The house was designed for a couple. Following a car crash, the husband became wheelchair-bound and his brief to the architect was clear, 'I do not want a simple house. I want a complex house because the house will define my world'. The heart of the house is a 3m by 3.5m elevator platform that moves between the three floors and itself becomes part of the kitchen, living space or office, giving easy access to books, artwork or a wine cellar. The house was completed in 1998. Photo Hans Werlemann ©OMA. OMA
