School buildings utilising modular timber construction in Cologne by Sehw Architektur
Berlin-based Sehw Architektur has completed a series of school buildings using modular timber construction in Cologne, in the North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.
For a special school in Dünnwald, Cologne, timber modules were lifted over the existing listed buildings to extend the school. The extensions are finished in red brick to blend with the existing listed post-war buildings. The interiors are designed to maximise daylight and feature classrooms with adjoining annexe rooms.

Basel-based Swiss architects Brandenberger Kloter Architekten have created a primary school building on the existing Sonnhalde campus in the centre of Aarwangen in the canton of Bern, Switzerland. Seamless in-situ concrete is used as the primary construction and facade material, in keeping with the existing 1960s buildings. A deep incision in the building at ground floor level marks the entrance, with a large entrance hall leading to the library, kindergarten and workrooms on the ground floor, and classrooms on the upper floors.

Paris-based Ateliers O-S Architectes have restructured an inefficient asbestos-ridden catering building, which is part of the Frédéric Joliot-Curie high school in the town of Dammarie-les-Lys. The updated 1960s building opens up a view of the forest from a 1,200-capacity dining room, and a large ‘roof’ volume brings in light through lateral windows while forming a generous canopy under which pupils can gather. Henning Larsen designs school in Denmark that captures more carbon than it emits
The Feldballe School extension in Rønde, Denmark has been designed by architects Henning Larsen using almost entirely bio-based materials such as wood and straw. The building uses natural and passive ventilation systems, together with solar panels, which are expected to eliminate energy consumption daily. The architects are now scaling up the model for a 13,000-square-meter project. Photo Rasmus Hjortshøj. Henning Larsen
